Much of the state is covered in a layer of permafrost—permanently frozen soil—and it’s home to the largest glacier in North America. The Bering-Bagley system covers an area of 3630 km2 with an accumulation area ratio (AAR) of 0.43 and an equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of approximately 1500 m (Beedle et al., 2008).
